Volunteer Intern – Climate Witness Project (Canada)

The intern will provide support to the World Renew Climate Witness Project (CWP) in Canada by assisting and supporting the Canadian Justice Mobilizer and Canadian Regional Organizers of the CWP. The emphasis for this position will be on learning about working within a Christian NGO, with a focus on climate change awareness, policy, and advocacy.

  • Date: September-December 2021 (start and end dates to be determined)
  • Hours: 10 hours per week, 120 hours

  • Reporting to: Cindy Stover, Mobilizer – Office of Social Justice/World Renew

General Duties and Responsibilities

Learn and Absorb:

  • Learn a basic history and terminology of World Renew (what we do, who staff are, what roles staff play, what World Renew’s vision and mission are, etc.).

  • Read promotional materials and CWP backgrounders as assigned.

  • Visit World Renew and CWP websites, YouTube channels, and social media as assigned.

  • As possible, participate virtually in office culture and in key staff meetings (team meetings, prayer, chapel, breaks, etc.).

  • Gain knowledge of and experience in the functions of a non-profit organization, including attending CWP team meetings, and meeting regularly with the justice mobilizer for supervision.

  • Meet with CWP and justice ministry staff across team functions to gain a balanced perspective of what it takes to operate this ministry.

Climate Witness Project

The student will have the opportunity to do some hands-on learning by helping to create some climate care resources, tracking Canadian climate change policy, assisting with advocacy campaigns, and completing other projects as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Assist the justice mobilizer in supporting the Canadian regional organizers.

  • Research and develop congregational resources on just transition.

  • Track the progress of current governmental climate change policies.

  • Support the Canadian CWP team in creating advocacy materials (action alerts, backgrounders) on current climate change policies.

  • Participate in the planning and execution of CWP events.

  • Attend CWP meetings when and if available (note: some of these meetings are in the evening).

Education and Experience

3rd/4th year university or post graduate student with a post-secondary institution and experience in the following areas: justice, environmental or other sciences, politics, theology, communications.

    – Human-induced climate change poses a significant threat to future generations, the poor, and the vulnerable.

    – Human-induced climate change, as a global phenomenon, poses a significant challenge to us all.

    – Urgent action at the personal, communal, and political levels is required to address climate change.
