Speaking out against disability and gender-based violence

Globally, 1 in 3 women are subjected to gender-based violence (GBV), which includes physical, verbal or sexual abuse. For women living with disabilities, GBV can go sometimes unnoticed. During the 16 Days of Activism campaign—a time designated to advocate for an end to GBV and uphold the rights of women and girls—the Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre in Nigeria, in collaboration with World Renew, hosted an advocacy seminar to amplify the issues of GVB. The goal was to raise awareness and provide crucial support for people with disabilities.
The room was filled with individuals who have faced similar struggles, all sharing their stories and finding strength in each other. The participants expressed immense gratitude to Beautiful Gate for organizing the seminar. They felt heard, supported, and ready to be advocates in their community.
“I now feel equipped to not only protect myself but also to help others who might be going through similar experiences,” one participant shared.
Education is key when more people understand the specific vulnerability faced by women with disabilities. We build a stronger and more inclusive community that stands up against all forms of violence. It is not just knowing the problem but knowing where to get help.
This seminar provided participants with contacts to reach out to when faced with challenges of violence. As we continue to seek justice, we need more spaces where people can come together to share their experiences and learn how to protect themselves and others. It is about creating a rippling effect of awareness and advocacy that can reach even the most remote communities.
Together, we can create a world, regardless of the issues, where we can be free from fear and violence.
