A Gnome-ble Cause in Canada
October 9, 2024
Jessica (10) and Brooke (9) from Hamilton, Ontario, raised money for World Renew by making and selling these cute gnomes. We interviewed them about their project.
So where did this idea begin?
Our mom found a craft for us to try and showed us how to make these gnomes. My teacher put some in the breakroom and then people started buying them. They just wanted to buy them because they’re so cute. So it’s awesome. And then I was like, that would be fun, to donate the money. We sold them for $2, but one person paid $10! We raised around $80 altogether.
How did you spread the word?
After we made a few, I brought them on the school bus. We told [our schoolmates] we were donating the money. They ordered some and got to choose what colour they wanted.
What gave you the idea to give the money to World Renew?
When World Renew visited our GEMS club at church, we had to share about our gifts. Jessica shared that she plays piano and Brooke shared that she is creative and good at art. We talked about using our gifts to serve God and others and we were thinking about where to donate our money. We thought, “Oh, that’s a good place to give it.”
What did you decide to buy from the Gift Catalogue?
A duck, a rabbit, trees, vitamins, and a handwashing station. We think the rabbits are so cool. They’re cuddly pets, and also they can give you manure. When they have babies, then you can sell them. You can make money and then be able to fill up your house or buy food.
