Wansiewdor Kharsyntiew, 24, lives in Barigoan village in India with her husband and two children. Wansiewdor’s husband, a farmer and day labourer did not earn enough to meet their basic needs. In 2019, Wansiewdor joined World Renew’s local partner NEICORD’s food security program. NEICORD equips women to make a greater contribution to their household income. She says, “I attended trainings on bookkeeping, composting, and agriculture. The training motivated me and I started planting wheat, maize, paddy, pumpkin, and banana.

Wansiewdor soon found the benefit of growing her own produce. She explains, “Food and fruit available at home reduced our expenses and improved our access to healthy food..”

Through the program, Wansiewdor took out a low-interest loan which she used to open a tea stall and snack shop. Smiling, she shares, “With the [profits] I got from the tea stall and snack shop, I bought 3 piglets and I hope to expand our piggery business.”

COVID-19 restrictions left many people in India, especially day labourers who depend on a daily wage, sinking deeper into poverty. But Wansiewdor’s dedication to learning new skills and putting them into practice paid off. She says, “During the COVID-19 lockdown our family would have struggled if I had not started farming prior to the lockdown.”

Before Wansiewdor worried about feeding her children and looked to the future with despair. Now she has dreams and looks to the future with hope. She shares, “I hope to make enough money to build a concrete building for my shop. Ultimately, my aim is to provide quality education for my son and daughter. With NEICORD and World Renew’s help, I dream of having a better life.”

Prayers for Asia

By Ruairidh Waddell

  • As floods and drought continue across Asia, please pray that training in conservation methods will improve farmers’ crop yields. Pray too for markets to open so farmers can sell produce.
  • We are grateful that World Renew and local partner EFICOR established a Peace Building Project in India. Joint church services are bringing the Malto and Santal communities together. They have a long history of conflict, so please pray they experience peace.
  • We are grateful that staff are travelling to field projects. Please pray for safety as they navigate difficult and dangerous roads, especially for those travelling to remote communities.
