Two years later, ILO reported that this form of modern-day slavery makes USD 150 billion of illegal profits annually.
July 30 is World Day against Trafficking in Persons, a commemoration initiated by the United Nations in 2010 to raise awareness and encourage people to take action against human trafficking. World Renew contributes to this effort by working alongside local partners, providing trafficking prevention training and improving people’s education and work opportunities.
Khady Ndiaye is a participant in World Renew’s Adolescent Health and Rights Program in Senegal. One of the goals of the program is to raise awareness of sexual exploitation. Khady learned about HIV and AIDS, and the dangers of early pregnancies and sexual abuse.
Khady’s new-found knowledge gave her the strength to stand up to injustice. “The sessions on sexual violence helped me a lot after my older sister was raped. When this happened I shared with my family what I had learned in our group. This gave us the courage to report the perpetrator. He is currently in prison.”
Like Khady, many participants in World Renew’s programs begin to fight against forced labor, forced marriage, sexual exploitation, and other types of oppression and slavery.
World Renew is combating human trafficking in Bangladesh, Laos, India, Nicaragua, and Cambodia. The programs address the needs in the local community, utilizing street theater, workshops, and other methods to teach parents and young people about the risks of trafficking and how to prevent it.
You can help provide vocational, health, and prevention training for victims of trafficking and give people in recovery hope as they rebuild their lives.
