WHAT WE DO

Senegal is one of West Africa’s more stable countries, but it remains a low-income nation with widespread food insecurity. With approximately 46 per cent of the country classified as semi-arid, the country is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change and drought. It is faced with several development challenges including low levels of education, high unemployment, and increased vulnerability to climate change. World Renew supports communities and local partners through programs that improve livelihoods, food security, and health. Our programs in Senegal have a special emphasis on youth empowerment and rights, encouraging young people to focus on their education while avoiding early marriage.

Renewing Hope: Changing Stories of Poverty

“My sister used to fight often, but she has improved tremendously. She loves the [Adolescent Health and Rights] program meetings and does not miss any. I know a little about the sessions because of her. She tells me that they ask questions, and the participants discuss the answers. The educator makes them aware of certain types of behavior that are harmful to their health . . . Now that I am aware of the importance of the program . . . I will participate next year.”

PARTNERS IN SENEGAL

Working alongside SLDS, World Renew encourages adolescent health and rights, supports families involved in orphan care, works to prevent the spread of AIDS, and promotes literacy and justice. Graduates of the adolescent health program promote youth advocacy through street theater and neighboUrhood forums to help change community attitudes and practices that are often at odds with child rights.

With YWAM, World Renew promotes health and justice in an impoverished community in Dakar. The program teaches teenage girls about health issues and healthy lifestyle choices. The peer educators also help facilitate challenging conversations between youth and their parents, helping them navigate complex cultural issues such as teenage marriage and pregnancy.

World Renew and ELS have long cooperated to support communities in the region around Fatick—and throughout the rest of Senegal. World Renew and ELS work together to promote adult literacy, facilitate community-based peace and justice programs, and in recent years, have started a pilot project to improve food security.
