World Renew understands that development and change in a society are often fueled by young people. As a result, much of our programming targets youth as a way to create sustainable change. In central Kenya, World Renew collaborates with the Micah 6:8 Foundation and the local Anglican Development Service Mount Kenya (ADSMKE) on an initiative called the Youth Running Clubs.

The Youth Running Clubs program, also known as the Kijana Ajibika Ministry, is in its third year of implementation and targets children aged 8-16. The program focuses on physical fitness and equipping young people to make positive life choices. The Clubs connect youth with mentors who emphasize the importance of striving for excellence, choosing good friends, and making responsible decisions.

John, a 14-year-old boy from a rural village, is one of the participants in the program. A year ago, John’s life was on a downward spiral. He was living with his grandmother, struggling with his studies, and behaving irresponsibly. His family was concerned.

When John joined the Youth Running Clubs, his attitudes and behaviours began to change. With the guidance of his mentors, John began distancing himself from negative influences and fostering healthier friendships. Coach Peter, one of the mentors, observed a remarkable transformation in John. John’s grandmother also noticed that he began to show more respect and gratitude toward her.

Over time, John improved his academic performance, opening the doors to a brighter future. He recently was accepted to a secondary school known for academic excellence. John credits the Kijana Ajibika Ministry for helping him become a better person. As he embarks on his secondary school journey, he remains committed to staying connected with the program, acknowledging the ongoing positive influence on his life.
