As you may know, I'll be travelling to the country of Honduras for more than five weeks this summer to volunteer with World Renew (formerly known as the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee).
Just a year ago in March 2012, I travelled to Nicaragua for ten days to partner with the YMCA in Los Alvarez, and together we helped build a community center in a rural village. While I was there I realized that God was calling me to become active in the global church and help my brothers and sisters in Christ in other parts of the world. When I got home I began searching for ways to make this happen. It was then that I learned about World Renew's SWAP (Serve With A Purpose) program. SWAP is available to youth and young adults, 14- to 24-years-old and provides multiple opportunities to explore how God is calling me to serve Him.
Through SWAP, I am given the opportunity to serve God and people within my own community as well. In September 2012 I started to volunteer each Tuesday at The Bridge, a downtown youth drop-in center in Peterborough. At The Bridge we run an after-school program for kids in grades four to six. We play games, eat snacks, and talk to them about God and about what He has to offer them.
The SWAP program includes an opportunity to serve in Honduras. I will be based in Tegucigalpa and travel to several different ministry sites that World Renew supports throughout the country. I will also participate in the ongoing projects at each site and learn about what God is doing in the lives of people who live there. I will have the privilege of staying with a local family and experience what Honduran culture and life is like.
This fall I start my studies at the University of Waterloo where I will be taking Social Development Studies. I'm excited to see how my studies tie in with my volunteering experiences, and I hope to find new ways to serve God and people during my time there.
The trip this summer will cost between $3,750 and $4,000. This total includes my airfare as well as my in-country travel expenses, food, and lodging. I invite you to partner with me on this journey.
You can partner with me by lifting me up in prayer, offering encouragement, and providing financial support. If you would like to give financially, you can do that at worldrenew.net by clicking the “donate now” button. You can also mail your check to…
