The Twelve Days of Christmas actually run from Christmas Day, December 25th, until the beginning of Epiphany, January 6th. In some places it is traditional to give Christmas gifts for each of the Twelve Days of Christmas. But in North America most gift giving seems to occur on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day itself… so we are going to run World Renew’s Twelve Days of Christmas up to – and including – Christmas Day. Thus, beginning December 14, watch this page for each day’s new verse! Sing along with us!

In Guatemala, many poor communities lack the resources to provide residents with a quality education. Schools may be nonexistent in some communities, and those that do exist may lack basic equipment that we take for granted—such as proper school desks.

In North America, many of us take clean water for granted. But it is estimated that 34,000 people around the world die every day from diseases that are the result of dirty water. Without clean drinking water, individuals are deprived of health.

A bicycle gives a family access to health care and transportation to markets. In Mozambique, a teacher with a bicycle can reach more villages to teach men, women, and children to read and write. Simply getting from here to there on a bicycle can open up opportunities that were previously out of reach.

In many parts of the world a mosquito bite is no small thing. Malaria and dengue fever spread through infected mosquitoes that infect millions every year, leaving them incapacitated for days at a time. One mosquito net will protect a child – five will protect an entire family from disease.

Most of the world’s poor are women, who have fewer educational opportunities and must also combat cultural biases. A microloan gives a woman the opportunity to start her own business, transforming her family’s overall health and education. Women are also likely to reinvest earned income because of their connection to the family’s needs.

In central Mozambique, a treadle pump gives farmers a way to water their crops in the dry season and significantly increases their harvest each year. This allows them to provide food for their families and sometimes have some left over to sell.

A goat serves as an asset for many families, sold to cover expenses as they arise. World Renew distributes goats to disaster survivors whose livestock have been sold or lost because of the disaster, helping them to re-establish their assets. Each recipient then gives the first goat kid to a neighbor in need, growing the impact of your gift. NOTE: The cost of a goat has risen in the last year due to increases in program costs such as veterinary care, goat care training, and animal feed.

. . . and a chicken through World Renew!
Chickens are an excellent gift for families in need. Chicken eggs are plentiful, providing a daily source of protein that is especially important for malnourished children. Chicken meat is also full of protein and can be part of a wholesome meal for a large family. In addition, chicken manure can be used to fertilize
a family’s vegetable garden, improving their harvests. The eggs or meat can also be sold at local markets for extra income. And through breeding, management baby chicks can be added to the flock or shared with other families.
