Growing Gardens of Hope in Malawi

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him and praise His name! For the Lord is good and His love endures forever, His faithfulness continues through all generations!” – Psalm 100: 4-5

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving here in Canada, World Renew gives thanks to God for the generous-hearted donors who have helped equip us to transform lives. We are grateful to see hope reflected in the smiles of participants in our programs–like Christopher who lives in a rural village in southern Malawi.

Every year, in anticipation of the rains, Christopher’s village begins to prepare the fields. But because of changing weather patterns, there have been many years when they battled either floods or extended dry periods that destroyed their crops.

In March 2019, Tropical Cyclone Idai swept across Malawi, wiping out crops and leaving farming families like Christopher’s with no means to generate income to meet their basic needs.

Christopher struggled to afford food and to pay his children’s school fees. Christopher felt hopeless and afraid for the future.

Through World Renew, a permaculture site was established in Christopher’s village. There, Christopher saw amazing gardens and food growing everywhere even though the rains had not come yet. He saw trenches and trees planted to prevent flooding. He also saw people raising animals in a way that was different from the way he raised animals, and was surprised to see that they used the waste of the animals in fish ponds to make compost.

That day, Christopher began to feel hopeful for the future; he began to believe that his family could thrive. Today, with a smile he welcomes World Renew’s field staff and is eager to learn about ways he can improve his crop yields. His smile reflects hope for the future.

Thank you for sharing God’s hope with families like Christopher’s.
